What Are The Real End Dates of Microsoft Dynamics GP?

Posted on: April 21, 2024 | By: Page Wildridge | Microsoft Dynamics GP

In the past year, Microsoft has made several announcements about the future of their on-premises ERP solution, Microsoft Dynamics GP. These announcements indicate that the GP lifecycle is coming to an end within the next few years. As it may be hard to keep track of these new updates from Microsoft, in this blog we will discuss the finite dates that have been provided. Additionally, we will go over what these dates mean for your company based on our expertise.

 Starting April 1, 2025

In less than a year from today, Microsoft will terminate new sales of GP perpetual licenses. Therefore sales to new consumers will end in 2025, while existing customers can continue to purchase licenses and modules. While Microsoft will remain committed to providing existing customers with support, keep in mind that they will be shifting their focus to their cloud-based ERP, Dynamics Business Central. This means less resources for existing customers.

 Microsoft Modern Lifecycle through 2028

GP will remain under the Modern Lifestyle through 2028, meaning they will continue to provide updates and bug fixes to the ERP for several years. However, these updates have already started to reduce drastically in the past few years. Unlike Business Central, GP has small yearly updates with minor fixes to the ERP, rather than drastically improving usability or introducing new features.

While 2028 might feel far away, the GP that you are using today is the same GP that you will use tomorrow, a year from now, and in 2028! As Microsoft switches its priorities to Business Central, it will be more and more difficult for your business to remain on GP. If you choose to stay with GP, you can anticipate a decrease in accessibility and an increase in costs. To read why, check out our blog here

So, although 2028 is a few years into the future, we recommend that you start to plan your switch from GP to a different ERP for the end of 2028, if not sooner. By planning accordingly for the end of GP, your business can avoid extra costs and complications associated with your ERP solution.
