Warehousing Options in Business Central

Posted on: April 22, 2024 | By: Page Wildridge | Microsoft Dynamics Business Central

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central comes equipped with several types of warehousing options to fit different businesses. Once a manufacturing and/or distribution company grows to a certain size, the utilization of a warehouse management system (WMS) becomes more and more beneficial. A WMS is a software that helps companies manage and control daily warehouse operations, from the moment goods and materials enter a distribution or fulfillment center until the moment they leave.

WMS software systems are a key component of supply chain management and offer real-time visibility into a company’s entire inventory, within both warehouses and in transit.

Business Central provides a simple WMS in the form of a warehousing module.  In this blog, we will detail these different warehousing types to help you find the best fit for your business.

Enabling Warehouse Settings within Business Central

In general, if a company does not have a warehouse staff and the back office manages inventory movements, then it makes sense to turn warehousing off within the ERP. Then, all movements are managed in their associated order or transaction, as there are no warehouse transactions. However, once a company has a warehouse staff, then utilizing the warehouse module is extremely beneficial.

These settings to determine the use of the warehousing module are all managed under “Location Setup.” Each of your locations can have its own settings. For example, if your company has a large warehouse with its own staff and a smaller warehouse managed by a 3rd party, each location can utilize different warehousing features based on their own requirements.

Different Configuration Options

Your company can configure warehouse features in various ways. It’s important to choose options that improve your processes without causing overhead. The table below gives an overview of typical configurations for dealing with physical goods.
