Revolutionizing Manufacturing with Demand Planning in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management

Posted on: February 26, 2024 | By: Fred Liu | Microsoft Dynamics AX/365, Microsoft Dynamics Manufacturing

In the manufacturing industry, the ability to accurately predict and plan for demand is not just beneficial—it’s a necessity for staying competitive in today’s fast-paced market. Read more about it here. The introduction of the Demand Planning app within Microsoft’s Power Platform offers manufacturers a robust tool to enhance their forecasting capabilities and optimize their supply chain management. This tool, specifically designed to integrate with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management environments (D365), presents a unique opportunity for the manufacturing sector to streamline operations and achieve significant efficiency gains.

Installing the App:

Key Point to Note: The Demand Planning app must be installed on the same tenant as your D365 environment to leverage built-in import and export profiles for seamless data transfer. However, you cannot install the app in the tenant’s default environment due to current technical limitations.

Steps for Installation:

  1. Sign in to the Power Platform admin center and select Resources > Dynamics 365 apps.
  2. Find the Demand planning (preview) app, click on it, and then select Install.
  3. Choose your environment, agree to the terms after reviewing the packages, and initiate the installation.

Setting Up in Supply Chain Management

To bring Demand Planning’s capabilities to your manufacturing operations, follow these steps for enabling and configuring the app:

  1. Activate the (Preview) Demand Planning feature in the Feature management workspace.
  2. In System administration > Setup > Demand planning app parameters, input the app’s URL in the General tab.
  3. For master planning parameters, go to Master Planning > Setup > Master planning parameters. It’s crucial to ensure the Demand forecast sequence number is correctly set up and to optimize the number sequence settings (e.g., enabling pre-allocation and setting the quantity of numbers to 500).
  4. Remember to save these configurations to secure your settings.

Refreshing the Data Entity List is essential for ensuring accurate data exchanges between Supply Chain Management and Demand Planning. This can be done through System administration > Workspaces > Data management by accessing the Framework parameters tile, then the Entity settings tab, and selecting Refresh Entity List.

Security Roles and Access

Demand Planning features are exclusively accessible to users with specific security roles and duties. Enabling the feature adds a privilege named Demand planning informational title, allowing direct access to the Demand Planning app from Supply Chain Management’s home page. This privilege is automatically applied to several standard roles and duties, but custom roles will require manual privilege assignment.

Benefits of Demand Planning for Manufacturing

Implementing Demand Planning in the manufacturing industry unlocks numerous advantages:

  • Improved Forecast Accuracy: Utilizes advanced analytics and historical data to forecast future demand more accurately, minimizing the risks associated with overproduction or understocking.
  • Inventory Optimization: Helps maintain ideal inventory levels, ensuring that capital is not unnecessarily tied up in surplus stock, thereby reducing carrying costs.
  • Operational Efficiency: Streamlines production planning and supply chain operations, leading to significant cost savings and enhanced profitability.
  • Responsive Supply Chain: Enables a more agile supply chain capable of responding quickly to market changes or supply disruptions, ensuring that production schedules remain on track.
  • Strategic Decision Making: Provides valuable insights that support more informed decision-making regarding product development, market entry, and resource allocation.

For manufacturers, the integration of Demand Planning on Power Platform signifies a shift towards more data-driven and responsive operations. By leveraging this tool, manufacturers can not only anticipate market demands more accurately but also align their production and supply chain strategies to meet these demands efficiently. This strategic advantage ensures that manufacturers can reduce waste, optimize resources, and ultimately deliver superior value to their customers, securing their position in a competitive marketplace.
