As more users are adopting Dynamics AX in their environment I see them juggling through multiple RDP sessions and logins to connect to their multiple environments of TEST, UAT, DEV, etc. You can accomplish this all from one desktop by creating AX configuration files and appending it to the Dynamics AX shortcut. Using this method you can create many different shortcuts to all your environments and layers as needed, all running on one desktop, as long as all instances are within the same network and running the same kernel and application version of Dynamics AX.

To start, we create Shortcut and a Configs directory that is shared to a UNC path and then you create your multiple AXC configuration files with the Microsoft Dynamics AX Configuration Utility saving your configuration to the Configs directory.

Here we have several *.axc files to each a specific instance or layer in my C:ShortcutsConfig directory.

With the shortcuts in the C:Shortcut directory

·        Using Windows security you can limit user’s access to the Shortcuts and Configs directory or take it one step further and hide the Configs directory with the $ sign.

You can see how from the example how we are appending the AXC file to the shortcut which will give us access to that instance without having to switch servers or desktops. Take this one step further and you can right click on the shortcut and run AX as a different user, which is great if you are using an older version of AX to test security roles or processes as a different user without having to log in with a new desktop session.

Right clicking on the shortcut gives us the ‘Run as different user’ option.

To avoid in the confusion of running multiple environment on the same desktop, there is an easy way to color code each of your environment by adding a small piece of code to the SysSetupFormRun class.  Please contact Logan Consulting for the instance specific color code and how to apply.

Hope this helps you in creating an easy and efficient method of accessing your different Dynamics AX environments.
