Units: Conversions and Decimal Places in Dynamics 365 for Operations

When it comes to utilizing your ERP system to its full potential, I believe it is helpful to know every small nuance possible, despite how trivial it may seem.  An example of that is the use of units in Dynamics 365 for Operations.  If you are using inventory, sales order and purchase order processing, then you need to read this blog!

First, I’m going to go to the Unit conversion form in the Organization administration module under Setup.

In this form, we have three different types of conversions.  The first being your standard conversions, which are your typical conversions necessary for when the unit of measurement needs a basic translation.  For example, 1 kg = 2.2 lb would be a common conversion if you were a company based in the United States, but dealt with vendors/customers in Europe.

Intra-class conversions are defined per each item.  They convert one quantity unit class to another, such as 10 pieces = 1 box or 5 boxes = 1 bin.  These can be customized to the specificity of your own company’s policies.

Inter-class conversions are also defined per each item, but they differ slightly.  One quantity unit class is converted to a standard unit of measurement, such as 1 bag = 20 pounds or 1 each = 10 kg.

 

Next, let’s go to the Units form.

 

In this demo environment, I have a lot of different units already populated.  Note: Use the Unit creation wizard to create standard units quickly.  I’m going to select the Hours unit to edit.  In the decimal precision box, you can change that to how many decimal places you would allow for this unit.  I’m changing it to 2 so when I create a sales order, I can more accurately bill for certain services.

 

When creating a sales order, I selected the sales category installation.  I entered a quantity of 4.50 with the unit ‘hr’ (Hour).  Since the unit price is $100, the net amount of the sales order is (4.50*100) = $450
