Microsoft Dynamics 365 Sales AI Agents
Posted on: October 8, 2026 | By: Jackson Morris | Microsoft Dynamics CRM
Microsoft currently offers three purpose-built Dynamics 365 Sales agents with generally available capabilities: Sales Qualification Agent, Sales Opportunity Agent, and Sales Research Agent. The Sales Agent in Microsoft 365 Copilot, which provides conversational access to sales and Microsoft 365 data, also reached general availability in July 2026, though a few of its embedded experiences remain in preview.
The near-term roadmap expands these agents and transitions autonomous outbound engagement from the retiring Sales Close Agent to the Sales Development Agent. Sales Development remains in preview, with no published general-availability date.
Current Status at a Glance
| Agent | Status | Primary Purpose |
| Sales Qualification Agent | Generally available | Researches, evaluates, engages, and qualifies leads |
| Sales Opportunity Agent | Generally available | Monitors active opportunities for risks, changes, and recommended actions |
| Sales Research Agent | Generally available | Answers complex sales management and revenue operations questions |
| Sales Agent in Microsoft 365 Copilot | Generally available | Provides conversational access to CRM and authorized Microsoft 365 data |

Scope note This briefing focuses on Dynamics 365 Sales and excludes Microsoft’s service, contact center, field service, marketing, and ERP agents.
Sales Qualification Agent
GENERALLY AVAILABLE SINCE OCTOBER 31 2025
The Sales Qualification Agent is Microsoft’s most mature autonomous agent built directly into Dynamics 365 Sales. It can operate in a research-only mode, where sellers remain responsible for outreach, or a research-and-engage mode that allows the agent to communicate with prospects autonomously.
Current Capabilities
- Research leads using Dynamics 365 data, public websites, and approved internal knowledge sources.
- Compare leads against an organization’s target customer profile.
- Produce lead and company summaries, company news, competitive insights, and suggested next steps.
- Draft or autonomously send personalized outreach and follow-up emails.
- Answer prospect questions using approved knowledge and detect purchase interest.
- Hand qualified leads to the appropriate seller with the research and engagement history.
- Disqualify or escalate leads based on configured rules.
Best Fit Organizations that receive enough inbound or marketing-generated leads that sellers cannot consistently research, contact, and qualify every lead.

Sales Opportunity Agent
GENERALLY AVAILABLE CAPABILITIES SINCE APRIL 15 2026
The Sales Opportunity Agent focuses on opportunities that have entered the active pipeline. Earlier Microsoft release materials called the underlying capability Opportunity Research Agent. Current Microsoft documentation uses Sales Opportunity Agent.
Current Capabilities
- Monitor opportunity, account, activity, meeting, and communication data.
- Research the account and opportunity.
- Identify changes, risks, missing information, and potential blockers.
- Surface buying signals and recommended actions.
- Update guidance when new information enters the opportunity.
- Allow sellers to discuss the agent’s insights through the Sales Agent interface.
Best Fit Organizations with longer or more complex sales cycles where opportunities can stall because risks, stakeholder changes, follow-ups, or buying signals are overlooked.

Sales Research Agent
GENERALLY AVAILABLE, WITH CAPABILITIES CONTINUING TO EXPAND
The Sales Research Agent is designed primarily for sales leadership, revenue operations, and sales analysts. Rather than managing one lead or opportunity, it allows users to investigate broader business questions through natural-language conversations with sales data.
Current Capabilities
- Analyze pipeline, forecasting, account, opportunity, and activity data.
- Combine Dynamics 365 Sales data with Microsoft Fabric lakehouse data and uploaded files.
- Compare performance against quotas, budgets, actual revenue, invoicing, or backlog.
- Identify trends, pipeline coverage concerns, forecast variances, and revenue risks.
- Produce narrative explanations and visualizations.
- Save and refresh research workspaces as underlying information changes.
- Show how research conclusions were developed.
Best Fit Sales executives and operations teams that currently assemble pipeline reviews, forecasts, and performance analysis manually across CRM, ERP, and spreadsheets.

Sales Agent in Microsoft 365 Copilot
GENERALLY AVAILABLE SINCE JULY 2026 (SELECT EMBEDDED EXPERIENCES REMAIN IN PREVIEW)
The Sales Agent is a conversational AI assistant that connects Microsoft 365 Copilot with Dynamics 365 Sales. It is distinct from the more autonomous Sales Qualification Agent and is becoming Microsoft’s preferred way to access Copilot assistance for sales work. Microsoft announced general availability of the Sales Agent on July 7, 2026, alongside Microsoft 365 Copilot inside Dynamics 365 Sales; a small number of embedded experiences, such as Teams meeting-preparation cards, remain in preview.
Current capabilities
- Ask questions about leads, accounts, contacts, and opportunities.
- Combine CRM information with authorized Outlook emails, Teams meetings, Teams messages, and Microsoft Graph data.
- Prepare for customer meetings and summarize customer activity.
- Draft emails and follow-ups and identify potential next steps.
- Create or update supported CRM information.
Best Fit Sellers who spend most of their day in Outlook, Teams, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and Dynamics 365 and need faster access to customer information without manually navigating CRM records.

Preview and Transitioning Agents
Two agents require special attention because they represent a product transition rather than two long-term options that should be evaluated independently.
Sales Close Agent
PRODUCTION READY PREVIEW WITH PUBLISHED RETIREMENT DATES
The Sales Close Agent is designed to automate high-volume, lower-complexity sales. It can contact customers, answer product questions, address common objections, recommend products, provide purchasing links, and escalate conversations to a human when necessary.
Microsoft has announced that new instances cannot be created after September 30, 2026. Existing instances are scheduled to be removed on October 30, 2026, and Microsoft directs customers to the Sales Development Agent instead. The Sales Close Agent should therefore not be treated as a long-term option for a new implementation.

Sales Development Agent
FRONTIER PUBLIC PREVIEW WITH NO PUBLISHED GENERAL AVAILABILITY DATE
The Sales Development Agent represents Microsoft’s next direction for autonomous prospecting and engagement. It operates primarily through Microsoft Teams and Agent 365 but can integrate with Dynamics 365 Sales.
- Research prospects and companies and produce personalized outbound outreach.
- Manage follow-ups, qualification, disqualification, ownership transfer, and seller handoff.
- Log engagement activity in Dynamics 365 Sales.
- Use configurable playbooks, product knowledge, guidelines, and guardrails.
- Operate through a dedicated agent identity with provisioned Microsoft 365 resources.
- Support multilingual outreach and Dynamics 365 integration through Dataverse.
Microsoft states that preview features are not intended for production use and may have restricted or changing functionality. No general-availability date is currently published.

Roadmap Disclosure Change
Beginning in September 2026, Microsoft stopped publishing new Dynamics 365 release-wave plans. Future Dynamics 365, Power Platform, and Dataverse capabilities will appear on Microsoft’s continuously updated AI at Work Roadmap. Published dates are estimates and can change. A feature should not be considered released until Microsoft shows a completed release date.

Availability and Licensing Considerations
General availability does not ensure automatic enablement, worldwide support, or inclusion without additional charges. Confirm licensing, Copilot Studio capacity, Microsoft 365 Copilot requirements, data residency, and tenant availability with Microsoft during solution design.
