Logan Consulting Adheres to Tight Custom Code Migration Process for its Upgrades

Posted on: December 24, 2017 | By: Tim Lovely | QAD Financials, QAD Manufacturing, QAD Business Process, QAD Distribution

Call them bespoke changes, configurations, add-ons, or custom code; companies using ERP systems often add or update standard ERP functionality to support their business processes. These customizations must be closely managed as part of any upgrade.

Logan Consulting specializes in QAD’s ERP application. Many of its recent and current projects focus on taking its clients from previous versions of the software to QAD’s most recent version, known as QAD Enterprise Edition. In order to successfully manage the migration of custom code, Logan Consulting relies on a simple set of tools and processes, including the following steps:

  • Catalog all customization as part of the Scoping and Planning Phase of the project

  • Estimate effort based on a simple H/M/L and program type scale to appropriately plan the work

  • Assign ownership to the developer or technical team for each customization for the developer to Remediate and Unit Test

  • Maintain rigid oversight of progress and issues during the remediation effort

  • Utilize client IT Business Analysts, when available, to test prior to moving to user testing

  • Engage the business users in the Conference Room Pilot (CRP) process, requirements, and approach.

  • Work with users to document all process testing scenarios thoroughly using CRP Scripts

  • Execute each CRP test script in a controlled environment using the upgraded software, with remediated customizations in place.

  • Track user approval of each CRP scenario and issue

  • Track the code promotion of all programs to the new environment

Although the steps above seem standard for any upgrade, teams often fail to follow them, resulting in gaps in functionality needed to support the business at cutover to the new version of the software.
