Why GP Still Working Isn’t Enough: The Shrinking ISV Ecosystem Around Dynamics GP
Posted on: August 11, 2026 | By: Jackson Morris | Microsoft Dynamics GP
If your business runs on Microsoft Dynamics GP, chances are it also runs on a handful of third-party products layered on top of it. Add-ons for AP automation, EDI, reporting, and document management have long filled the gaps in GP, and for years that model worked well. Today, those same add-ons are becoming the weak point. As software vendors modernize around cloud platforms and API-based integration, their GP editions are receiving less investment, fewer updates, and shrinking compatibility with the tools businesses actually want to connect. The core system may still work, but the ecosystem holding it together is quietly coming apart, and that is becoming one of the strongest reasons to plan a move.

GP Was Built for a Different Integration Era
Dynamics GP is built on Dexterity, a development architecture dating back to the early 1990s, and it connects to other systems through older technologies such as eConnect, SOAP-based web services, and direct SQL access. Modern applications work differently. Today’s SaaS platforms, banking tools, e-commerce systems, and AI services communicate through REST APIs, webhooks, and event-driven data flows. When a new tool only speaks the modern language, connecting it to GP requires custom middleware, manual workarounds, or simply going without. Each year, that gap gets wider.
ISVs Are Following the Market
Independent software vendors invest where their customers are going. With Microsoft directing its innovation toward Dynamics 365 Business Central and the cloud, ISVs that built their businesses on GP add-ons are shifting engineering resources to Business Central, NetSuite, Acumatica, and other cloud ERPs. Many GP-compatible products are now in maintenance mode: critical bugs get fixed, but new features and connectors appear only in the cloud versions, and some vendors have announced sunset dates for their GP editions entirely. A GP environment that depends on five or six third-party products is only as current as the least-supported one.
The Operational Ripple Effect
This erosion shows up in daily operations first. A bank changes its file format and the GP connector is never updated to match. An e-commerce platform deprecates an old API version and the order sync breaks. At the same time, fewer consultants and developers maintain deep GP and Dexterity expertise, so rebuilding a broken integration becomes slower and more expensive every year.
The Support Timeline Compounds the Problem
Microsoft has announced end of support for Dynamics GP, with product support ending December 31, 2029, and security patches ending April 30, 2031. Every ISV planning a roadmap can see those dates, which gives vendors little incentive to keep investing in the platform. Meanwhile, the 2026 release wave for Business Central centers on AI-powered agents and extensibility, and its ISV ecosystem is expanding just as GP’s contracts.
Making the Move on Your Terms
None of this means a GP environment fails tomorrow. It means the cost and risk of standing still rise each quarter, and the businesses that fare best plan a transition before an integration failure forces the timeline. A well-run migration to Business Central typically takes 12 to 18 months, so starting early leaves time to evaluate which ISV products you still need, which are replaced by native functionality, and which modern alternatives serve you better.
Next Steps
If your Dynamics GP environment depends on aging third-party integrations, the strongest reason to migrate may not be GP itself but the ecosystem around it. Logan Consulting helps GP customers assess their ISV footprint, map those capabilities to Dynamics 365 Business Central, and execute a migration on a timeline that fits the business.
