Should Companies Stay on Microsoft Dynamics GP?

As Microsoft continues to release new information about Dynamics 365 Business Central, many clients are wondering about the future of Dynamics GP. Although we recently published our FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) for companies moving from Dynamics GP to Business Central, we have yet to address an important question: Can companies stay on Dynamics GP?

The simple answer is yes. In fact, Logan Consulting has many clients who are staying on Dynamics GP and even upgrading their GP environment to the latest version of Dynamics GP released in 2020. Microsoft has committed to releases until 2024, and almost always offers five years of mainstream support; this timeline would give companies a ten-year runway. Now, the question becomes “Should companies stay on Dynamics GP?”, and our answer is more complex.

What You See is What You Get

While Microsoft continues to release Dynamics GP updates, these updates have only consisted of minor changes. Therefore, what you see now in Dynamics GP is what you will get. In other words, the Dynamics GP platform you are using today is the Dynamics GP you will be using going forward, as Microsoft is not investing heavily in Dynamics GP.

Cloud

Recently, more and more companies have started considering moving their ERP platform to the Cloud due to the rising cost of maintaining and securing on-premises solutions. Taking into consideration the price of a new server every five years with supplemental updating licenses for SQL and Windows, the cost of maintaining on-premises solutions can be daunting. Therefore, moving the Cloud for a simple monthly license fee is appealing. With Dynamics GP, the issue remains that GP is not available in the Cloud. You can certainly find companies that offer so-called “Dynamics GP in the Cloud,” but this only means moving your GP licenses to a remote server and accessing them via a remote desktop connection. As a result, you still can’t access GP via a web browser with this solution.

Mobile

On a related note, Dynamics GP is not available on a mobile device. Again, there are third-party platforms that offer limited “workaround” options, but the Dynamics GP application is not truly available on a mobile device right out of the box. However, mobile device compatibility is offered by Business Central.

Ultimately, the answer to “Can we stay on Dynamics GP?” is complicated and depends on your business needs. That being said, if you are interested in reviewing your options, Logan Consulting is experienced in helping businesses assess their Dynamics GP deployment options — feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns!
