Shipping Rules – Not just for ASN’s…

Posted on: September 27, 2019 | By: Brian Clark | QAD Business Process, QAD Distribution

Introduced in Enterprise Edition, Shipping Rule functionality offers an opportunity for QAD users to tighten up data accuracy during the shipping process. For QAD installations in the automotive vertical, EDI plays a major role in the communication of requirements and shipment information with the customer. In QAD Standard Edition, users typically had to wait until the ASN Export screen to populate relevant variables for a successful outbound ASN. With Shipping Rules, QAD can be configured to prompt the shipping coordinator for specific data elements at the pre-shipper, shipper and confirmation steps. These rules, once defined, can be applied to customers at the customer or ship-to level.

Shipping Rules are not limited to QAD installations in the automotive vertical, however, nor is their utility limited to ASN data. Think of any data element that could be useful at the shipper level, that might require some sort of validation, and a Shipping Rule may be a good candidate as a solution. For example, we have used Shipping Rules to enforce ship-to specific carrier code selection. This can provide some guidance to the Shipping personnel about valid carriers in the event the default carrier is not available. We have even configured the appropriate rules to construct a commercial invoice document for international shipments, while the implementation of a true trade management system is underway.

Whether for pulling the maintenance of ASN-bound information back into the Pre-Shipper/Shipper Workbench, or prompting users for specific information for custom forms, Shipping Rules give QAD users the ability to enforce the population of shipping data throughout the shipping process.
