Microsoft Dynamics GP Roadmap

Posted on: October 8, 2019 | By: Guy Logan | Microsoft Dynamics GP

Many people wonder about the Microsoft Dynamics GP roadmap and in fact, at Logan Consulting, we have produced several videos regarding the future of Dynamics GP.  Last week, Microsoft made an interesting pronouncement regarding the future of Dynamics GP. They announced that Dynamics GP is moving to what is now  called the “Modern Policy.” There has been speculation about Microsoft Dynamics GP and a new release coming late this year. With this latest pronouncement from Microsoft, we now have direction from Microsoft on the future of Dynamics GP and the Dynamics GP Roadmap.

The Modern Policy

Starting with the release in October of 2019, Microsoft will move Dynamics GP to the Modern Policy. The Modern Policy will offer continuous support and servicing including bugs, fixes, new features and patch updates for Dynamics GP. This is good news for people who want to stay on Dynamics GP as Microsoft has produced a release schedule that continues through 2024.

Dynamics GP Updates

Microsoft has committed to three-yearly updates of Dynamics GP going forward. However, in order to stay current, clients will need to take at least one of the three yearly releases, meaning you will have to upgrade at least once a year to stay supported by Microsoft. For example, in 2020 if you do an upgrade and take one of the releases in the middle of the year, you could then skip a release that would come in late 2020. However, by the end of 2021, you would need to take one of the 2021 updates to stay current on Dynamics GP. If you skip a year, your solution will no longer be supported by Microsoft.

For clients who are still using Dynamics GP 2018 or earlier, you can still stay on that version. However, once you move beyond Dynamics GP 2018, you will be moved to the Modern Policy and need to take one of the annual updates each year. We will continue to provide additional details, thoughts, and opinions on this new Modern Policy from Microsoft and on the Dynamics GP roadmap. However, at this time, we wanted to provide the general information so people could start to digest and understand Microsoft’s latest plan.
