Finding the Right ERP Partner
The task seems simple. Find an ERP partner that is knowledgeable, experienced, and that will deliver on your business’s goals. Shouldn’t be too difficult right? Unfortunately, many companies start their journey to find the best ERP partner with a similar, basic and ill-prepared approach. Sure they may have a checklist of what they are looking for, and a simple outline of interview questions, but they aren’t fully armed with the ability to find the right partner. The fact is, finding the best ERP partner for your company isn’t a small task, and the outcomes associated with the partner you choose will impact your company in a big way for years to come- for good or for bad.
Ask the Right Questions
So how can you enter your ERP partner search with your eyes wide open? What steps can you take to be completely prepared so that you can find a partner that will deliver on your goals?
The key lies in asking the right questions. Not just good questions, but tough questions. Ones that will make them think. All ERP companies have heard the common questions about cost and experience multiple times, and they likely have prepared answers waiting for you. So why not throw something more challenging their way and see how they handle it? Their responses to the tough questions will give you the needed insight into how well they know your company and how they would fare as your ERP partner.
Take implementation for example. No doubt you were planning on asking something about their implementation method. But why not dig deeper and figure out why their method will be successful for your company? How will their approach prove to be beneficial to your company’s needs? Make them go beyond data conversion and training details by clearly defining their step-by-step approach. And don’t just take their word for how successful they’ve been in the past. Ask for proof! A good ERP partner will be happy to spend time with you, explaining in full detail their approach as well as any potential challenges they foresee.
One piece of advice we give to ERP buys is, “Define your requirements before you start meeting with anyone, but don’t define every single little thing. Every system can do the essentials. Define 5 to 10, at most, core requirements and base your decision on how each system and partner meets those core requirements.”
Yes, it IS possible to find the right ERP partner. But you need to be fully prepared to dig deeper. Here at Logan Consulting, we don’t shy away from the tough questions. Rather, we welcome them! So don’t be afraid. Arm yourself with the tough questions and fire away. It can be the key to your success.
