What it Means to be a Leader

Many call themselves a leader—but what traits really define this role? Being the loudest, the bossiest, and the most enthusiastic doesn’t necessarily cut it. Leadership means more than making the rules and implementing them, it means having infinite passion and dedication for your team. Let’s discuss further what it truly means to be a leader and what you can do to improve your leadership skills today.

Selflessness

There is no denying overseeing a group pours gasoline in your egotistical fire, but it’s important not to let this taint your purpose as a leader. Leadership should mimic the dynamic of parenting in the sense that you always want those you are leading to have the proper materials to succeed and flourish. Leaders that get overconsumed in their power tend to step on their employees or inferiors and make them feel unimportant. If you want a team that is willing to go above and beyond for your organization, empowerment and respect is key!

Accountability

Have you ever witnessed the coach that screamed at his or her team after a loss? I know we all have seen this scenario play out before our eyes—but is this effective? Leaders that learn from mistakes and create new solutions based on these mistakes are the ones that find true success in the end. Giving encouraging advice that lifts your team up rather than tears them down has a more impactful affect long term.

Communication

Without the ability to facilitate both in person and digital communication effectively, it is likely your leadership skills are not up to par. Successful leaders not only orchestrate open communication, but they also listen to what others say and they make decisions based on a community-wide input. Skillful leaders also give constructive criticism and feedback to initiate growth within the company.

A perk to leadership is that it is a learned skill. Despite popular belief, the more you polish and practice your leadership skills, the better leader you’ll become. So get practicing!
