Making the Switch to Business Central
Posted on: August 26, 2025 | By: Page Wildridge | Microsoft Dynamics GP
Microsoft’s on premises solution, Dynamics GP, has had many updates regarding its lifecycle and plans for next steps. These updates indicate that Microsoft is switching their resources to their cloud-based ERP Dynamics 365 Business Central. If your business is debating making the switch from on-premises to the cloud, in this blog we will cover what you should consider.

Making the Switch
Moving your information from GP to Business Central is not as simple as clicking a button. Microsoft has Migration tools and a full breakdown on their Learn site to help you figure out the switch. It requires readiness assessments, replicating and upgrading your data to make the migration, and more. While this requires effort from your team to get started on the new system, Business Central’s benefits may outweigh the work required to get the ERP set up.
Freedom to Work Wherever
As an on premises ERP, to use GP you have to use specific devices. Instead, by switching, you can use cloud-based software that lets you work wherever you have access to a browser. Additionally, Microsoft’s newest updates come with several different mobile applications, like Microsoft Sales and the Business Central mobile app. This provides added flexibility for your field workers and technicians to make sure they never miss an update.
Constant Improvement
Dynamics GP has not had major updates to the software in quite some time. This indicates to current users that the GP they are using today, is the same GP that they will be using next year, and for years to come. Microsoft does plan to help users with bug fixes and minor tweaks to the software. Still, there will be no more new updates or features on the ERP. Cloud-based ERPs are able to upgrade throughout the year. Microsoft releases upgrades to Business Central twice a year that bring new features and cutting edge technology. Remaining with GP means no access to upgrades, including any sort of AI automation that is embedded in Business Central already.
