Tracking Items Through Serial and Lot Numbers in Business Central

Posted on: May 23, 2022 | By: Jim Bertler | Microsoft Dynamics Business Central

Being aware of the location and status of your company’s inventory is very important. Serial and lot tracking numbers are very common in the manufacturing industry because they make it easy to determine where a specific item is at, whether it be a product or a component of a product.

Serial numbers and lot numbers, while similar in function, differ largely from one another. Essentially, lot numbers are a part of batches and are tied to a specific batch of items. Serial numbers are unique to each individual product, and no two items would have the same serial number. Utilizing these different forms of tracking can make the production process more efficient because it assists in the inventory management.

Business Central supports users in the tracking of these items through the Item Tracking Lines page. Users can modify existing serial or lot number information, reclassify both tracking numbers, and assign serial or lot numbers to both inbound and outbound transactions.
