QAD Item Attributes and Quality Control (IAQ) and Extending the Item Master

With the release of QAD 2015 Enterprise Edition, QAD introduced new functionality called QAD Item Attributes and Quality Control (IAQ). IAQ has robust functionality in a number of areas, including the following:

  • Item Attributes
  • Inventory and Lot Attributes
  • Test Specifications
  • Quality Control for WIP and Production
  • Certificate of Analysis
  • IAQ Integration with QAD QMS

In this article we will focus on the first item above, Item Attributes, which addresses a typical need to “extend” the item master and maintain additional data that is not supported by the standard QAD Item Master. As every company is different, each one has different requirements for item master data and associated fields. QAD users over the years have added user fields or enabled side databases or tables to allow users to maintain additional data fields and elements not available in the standard item master. This approach not only leads to additional customizations and potential schema change requirements, but is not supported by QAD.

The functionality of Item Attributes allows a user to define individual attributes with different data types and characteristics. Item Profiles, which can be thought of as a unique item’s relationship to one or more attributes, can then be defined. An item Attribute can be thought of as a specific trait that is used to partially define the uniqueness of an Item. The value for this trait is fixed for a specific Item Number. It does not change on a lot, supplier, or customer basis. It is easy to think of an Item Attribute as extensions to the standard Item Master fields (Type, Group, etc.).

Item Attributes can then be added to browses and browse collections as needed to support the business. QAD Reporting Framework (QRF) can also be used to display Item Attributes on forms as needed for such forms as Purchase Orders, Work Orders and Sales Orders.
