Label File Maintenance in Microsoft Dynamics AX

Have you ever had a development or testing environment where menu items looked more like Twitter account names than AX software because there are so many “@” signs?  If that is the case, you probably have a label issue in your environment.

Label files are created to add titles & descriptions to new forms, fields, security roles, and many other areas within AX.  They are used mostly in development since nearly every developed piece of software will require some documentation, or description.

Label files are also helpful when distinguishing differences between cultures in AX.  Have you ever noticed a slight difference in the spelling of a word when toggling between two different companies in an international instance of AX?  These tiny differentiators are contained in the label files for a particular culture.  Developers have to be conscientious when developing to make sure they encompass label changes for all cultures that are being used within an AX instance.

If you happen to see many of these labels, verify the culture you are logged in as by clicking File>Tools>Options and under the General tab you check the language and default country/region

To verify the presence of labels in the AOT, go to Tools>Label>Label editor and do a search on criteria in the correct language.
