Enhancing Warehouse Efficiency with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management’s Over-picking Feature
Posted on: February 21, 2024 | By: Jarrod Kraemer | Microsoft Dynamics AX/365, Microsoft Dynamics Manufacturing
Discover how Microsoft Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management enhances warehouse operations with its advanced over-picking feature, designed to optimize material handling and space utilization. Warehouse management demands efficiency, adaptability, and smart resource allocation. Microsoft Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management provides solutions with its continuous innovations, such as the over-pick materials feature for production orders and batch orders. This blog post delves into how this feature streamlines operations and provides strategic advantages in warehouse management.
What is Over-picking?
Over-picking is an optimized approach to handling materials in the warehouse, beneficial in scenarios such as:
- Clearing Space: Picking the full contents of nearly empty locations to free up warehouse space.
- Rounding Quantities: Adjusting the picked quantity to the nearest packing unit for efficiency.
This feature allows warehouse workers to exceed the standard picking amounts by a controlled percentage, enhancing operational flexibility and efficiency.
Key Features
Managing Over-picking
The over-pick materials feature is easily managed through the Feature Management workspace, allowing adjustments at various levels:
- Global Threshold: Set at the product level to define the maximum over-picking percentage.
- Flexible Overrides: Adjustments can be made at the bill of materials (BOM) line level or even for individual warehouse workers and mobile devices.
Operational Workflow
The integration into the standard workflow is seamless, with the system:
- Checking Availability: Upon a production order release, it verifies material availability at the production input location.
- Generating Work Orders: If materials are not available on-hand, it creates a picking work order.
- Enforcing Rules: Depending on the location’s license plate enablement and picking policy, it decides if over-picking is applicable.
Setting Up Over-picking
Enabling the Feature
Start by ensuring the over-pick materials feature is activated in the Feature Management workspace.
Configuring Settings
- Material Picking Options: Define settings for both license plate and non-license plate locations.
- Threshold Settings: The default over-picking threshold is 10%, adjustable as needed.
Warehouse Worker Setup
- User ID Configuration: Enable production over-picking for warehouse workers and on warehouse mobile device menu items.
