Dynamics D365 Finance and Operations: Basic understanding of Security Configuration

Posted on: June 19, 2020 | By: Michael Angel | Microsoft Dynamics AX/365, ERP Selection

Security configuration can be a very complex and daunting task that can often get overlooked during an implementation. Security is an essential piece to any implementation due to the various levels of sensitive information that should only be viewed by certain people who have clearance. In order to make the security configuration process less daunting, a business should know Dynamics Security Structure.

Microsoft has designed security based on Roles. This means that you can assign roles to users and you can have more than one role for each user. Each Role in the system is made up of duties, which grant access to certain areas of the system.

Duties are built off privileges and these privileges grant you the ability to perform an action in the system.

Within a privilege you can modify permissions based on “Unset”,” Grant”, or “Deny” for “Display menu items” in the system. Display menu items are the individual screens and buttons of the system, they are the most granular level that can be edited for security. Privileges are compiled from one or more “Display menu items”.

To sum things up, Roles are built off of duties which contain privileges that are built from display menu items.
