Microsoft Dynamics GP vs. Dynamics 365 Business Central

Dynamics GP vs. Dynamics 365 Business Central

Over the last several years Microsoft has begun and continues to drive
a major push to the cloud so the question is Dynamics GP vs. Dynamics 365 Business Central which is better.  Microsoft’s push to the cloud is especially true in the ERP and Accounting Software space as Microsoft has released their Dynamics 365 Business Central solution. Business Central is primarily a cloud-based solution though it can be licensed on-premises.  Microsoft still develops and supports the Dynamics GP solution and both solutions are directed towards the mid-market. So the question we often receive is “What is the difference between Dynamics GP and Business Central?”

Of course, we could write for a quite a while on the differences, but I thought I would try to summarize three major differences.

Dynamics GP vs. Dynamics 365 Business Central – Cloud vs. On-Premises

On the surface both solutions are available on-premises and both are available in the cloud.  However, the reality is that one is more of a cloud solution and the other is on-premises.  Business Central was released as only a cloud-based solution and that is how it is most often licensed.  While Business Central can now be deployed on-premises, part of the draw of Business Central is to rid yourself of the servers, redundancy, upgrades, etc.  Similarly, while you will see Dynamics GP advertised in the cloud, it really is an on-premises solution. A Dynamics GP cloud solution is simply the on-premises software hosted by a 3rd party (not Microsoft) and they provide access for you. The access is provided via a remote desktop connection or Citrix and you can’t access Dynamics GP via a web browser. There is a GP web client, but it hasn’t proven reliable and some functions and many 3rd party add-ons don’t work in the web client.

Manufacturing and Distribution Functionality

Another issue when consider Dynamics GP vs. Dynamics 365 Business Central is is functionality. Both Dynamics GP and Business Central have full accounting, distribution and manufacturing functionality.  However, you will see Dynamics GP deployed in a pure accounting function more often than Business Central. In addition, the manufacturing and distribution functionality of Business Central is more sophisticated.  Business Central offers strong warehousing functionality (directed put aways and picks as an example) whereas that functionality is a 3rd party add-on in Dynamics GP.

Microsoft Direction and Development

We have a webinar coming up in March to discuss this topic further, but Microsoft is certainly spending more of their time, resources and dollars on Business Central than Dynamics GP. This isn’t to suggest that Microsoft, or Logan Consulting for that matter, is dropping Dynamics GP support. In fact, at Logan Consulting we have been experiencing strong growth in our Dynamics GP practice.  However, it is obvious where Microsoft is spending their resources. As an example, Microsoft has two releases per year of Business Central and provides major upgrade releases of Dynamics GP about every two years.

We hope you have found this information helpful as you try to determine Dynamics GP vs. Dynamics 365 Business Central and certainly would be interested in discussing a Microsoft Dynamics solution with you.  Logan Consulting is a full-service Microsoft Dynamics 365 partner including being a Dynamics 365 Business Central partner and a Dynamics GP Partner. We are based in Chicago, Illinois and serve clients throughout the United States.
