Machine Learning: The Future of Manufacturing?

Technology is growing at an increasing rate and things are changing rapidly. Only a few years ago electric cars started to gain traction among consumers and now we already have cars driving themselves. Robots are being manufactured and tested in all sorts of fields to find benefits in using a machine to accelerate processes. But the question now is whether these machines can learn. The answer is YES.
Machine learning is real. Machines have the ability to make predictions and complete tasks that they were not necessarily programmed to complete. People learn based on historical data, seeing what works and what doesn’t. There may even be multiple ways of completing a single task. Machines are beginning to have those same abilities through algorithms.
Machine learning can increase productivity, efficiency and accuracies in a variety of production environments. Many processes in production environments rely on predictions. These predictions are usually formed based on past data. This could include previous sales, market trends, current or past, and much more. Machines can process this data, and more, more quickly than a person can. As more data is added the machine’s predictions will get more accurate and evolve.
So how does it work? Machine learning algorithms are used to calculate possible outcomes using data. The more data, the more accurate the prediction will be. Similar to any new systems this would need to be tested using previous data to ensure the outputs are accurate and adjust as needed. Once the process is tested, using this machine learning will optimize production processes by forming predictions more quickly and accurately than a person could.
Machine learning is still in early stages but could possibly become the future of manufacturing. ERP vendors and integrators continue to research machine learning to be prepared for the future. It is important that you have an ERP system that is ready for these changes and maintaining data in a way that would make adapting to machine learning an easy transition.
