GP Lifecycle Date Update- What Does It Mean For You?
Posted on: March 6, 2025 | By: Page Wildridge | Microsoft Dynamics GP
In our previous GP blogs, we have extensively covered the announcements from Microsoft about the future of their on-premise ERP, GP. Microsoft has made the decision to end support for GP. In their latest update, Microsoft announced that they would push back the end of product support and updates to December 31, 2029 (rather than September 30). In this blog, we will cover how this Microsoft GP date change can affect your business.

Why the Microsoft GP Date Change?
Microsoft pushed the date to ensure that your business can receive assistance and utilize product support through the tax year-end. This later date of December 31, 2029, ensures that your business has ample time to make a decision about the future of your ERP. Although Microsoft is offering updates until 2029, it is important to know that these updates are small. The GP that you use today is the same GP that you will use tomorrow and in 2029. Microsoft’s updates to their product include minor bug fixes and no major updates or features. In contrast to their biannual improvements to their cloud-based ERP, Business Central, the GP that you use today will barely change as you continue using it.
Should I Stay or Go?
Staying with the ERP is still an option, but it is important to know the risks. In the long term, you will need to budget for inevitable future costs. Like all technology, the ERP will run into issues for which your business will need support. After Microsoft ends its support, you will have to find GP specialists to help you with the software. As time goes on, fewer and fewer people will have experience with GP, so your business must be prepared for delays and costs.
Additionally, an on-premises ERP comes with a few downsides, including reduced accessibility for you and your business. Unlike cloud-based solutions, the ERP cannot be accessed from mobile devices or browsers. Instead, you need to use computers that have GP installed already.
