Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations: Production Units- Do I Need Them?

Production units are not necessary when setting up and configuring production in Dynamics 365, but they do add a layer of detail when analyzing your shop floor. A production unit has no impact on production transactions or how they are processed, it merely is a bit of classifying information.
To set up a production unit simply created one in Production> Setup> Production> Production units. You have to identify name, description and input/output warehouses. Once the unit has been set up you can add resource groups to them. This would be helpful if you have different production processes in your warehouse, especially if your resource groups are divided into groups that produce part of a finished good. From there you can then see which resource groups have capacity or which resource groups are causing a bottleneck. Try test driving these items in your environment and see if they provide any value.
