When life takes turns you didn’t expect it’s important to be on top of your game and ready for any new challenges that come your way! Prepping for job interviews? Read about these 5 tips that’ll help you stand out from the crowd and land the job.
Practice Makes Perfect
There is no way to prepare for every question that’s going to come your way, but practicing with a friend or family member before the interview will increase your chances of success. This exposure to interviewing before the real deal will allow your nerves to calm and your voice to clear. Have whoever is mock interviewing you to come up with the questions on their own so your practice interview experience is as close to reality as possible.
Use Your Network
Can we all take a minute to appreciate the internet? Having access to resources like LinkedIn makes pre-interview research SO much easier, so use this to your advantage! See if any of your connections work at your dream company, and if so start asking for recommendations. Connect with contacts at the company and don’t be afraid to ask questions. The worst that can happen is you don’t get a response. Oh well, move on!
Do Your Research
When going into an interview you should be familiar with the company’s mission- no exceptions. This research will not only help you formulate better answers, but it’ll also allow you to ask relevant questions you may have. Chances are there is something not mentioned in the job description that you are dying to know about that position or company you are applying for. It’s better to be upfront with any questions rather than regret not asking them in the future.
Dress for Success
Sorry to disappoint, but your first impression doesn’t come from what you say, it comes from the way you look. This can make a huge impact on a potential employer. Although, what makes an appropriate interview outfit varies by company go with something versatile that would work almost anywhere you’d go. Do not go overboard with colors or patterns, you want to stand out for what you offer, not for wearing a bright yellow jumpsuit!
Write a Thank You Note
Taking the time to thank anyone that interviewed you is excellent etiquette. It reminds them that you have the desire for the job and that your follow-up skills are up to par. While a hand-written note is best, snail mail isn’t always effective in a time crunch. If a hand-written thank you card is not possible, an email is sufficient and gets the point across.
