What Does Microsoft’s Latest Announcement Mean for Me?

Posted on: October 29, 2024 | By: Page Wildridge | Microsoft Dynamics GP

After months of predicting the future of GP, Microsoft has officially announced that they will be ending product support and all updates on September 30th, 2029. Although this announcement has been anticipated, it officially signals the end of the lifecycle of GP. In this blog, we will cover what this announcement means for your business, including next steps and what it means to stay with GP.

1. Staying with GP

If your business is more comfortable staying with GP, that is still an option. However, your business needs to evaluate the risks associated with sticking with GP. In the long term, there will be less accessibility and greater costs. To start with, the GP that you are using today is the same GP that you will be using in the future. Microsoft has already slowed updates to the software, but their announcement signals that all updates will end in 2029.

The end of Microsoft support means that you will need to look towards third party partners to help you with the software instead of relying directly on Microsoft. No matter what you do, there will be times when you need help with your software and when things go wrong, so your business needs to have a budget for specialists to help you with your system. The longer you stay with GP, the higher these associated costs will be.

2. Making the switch to Business Central

Business Central has the benefits that GP lacks- such as more updates throughout the year that bring about user interface changes and new features. Additionally, Business Central is accessible from any place that you have access to the internet. However, making the switch from GP to Business Central is not just a simple switch, but there is a mitigation tool that you can utilize to help make the process easier. However, there will be certain information that will not mitigate over to the cloud-based ERP.
