What Does It Mean to Move From Microsoft Dynamics GP to Business Central?

Posted on: May 22, 2024 | By: Page Wildridge | Microsoft Dynamics GP

Microsoft has released new announcements to the lifecycle of their on-premise ERP solution, Microsoft Dynamics GP. While Microsoft will remain committed to current GP users, they have decided they will end new sales of their product in 2026.  Additionally, the modern lifecycle of GP will remain until 2028, meaning they will provide updates and bug fixes to the product to keep it running smoothly.

These dates might signal to you that it’s time for a switch from Microsoft Dynamics GP to their cloud-based ERP, Business Central. While Logan Consulting still supports GP and GP clients, we wanted to document how a switch to Business Central would impact your ERP experience.

 1. Improved UI and Updates

Although Microsoft has announced that they will continue to update the on-premise ERP, these updates only occur once a year, typically with minor bug fixes. Essentially, this means that the GP you are using today is the GP you will use tomorrow, and a year from now! You will not see any major upgrades to the ERP, meaning no new features or large improvements. Business Central has large updates twice a year, with new features and technology innovations in each release. Business Central will allow you to have a constantly improving and smoother running ERP.

 2. Easier Updates

With these twice a year updates, it is easier to implement these improvements into your ERP within Business Central. On a cloud-based platform, these updates can be installed with a few simple clicks. As time goes on with GP, you will need to update your servers, hardware, backup systems, and more to keep the ERP running smoothly.

 3. Better Support

Microsoft’s announcement signals to users that they are switching their energy away from GP and towards their other solutions. This means that, if an issue arises on GP, there will be fewer people available to help your business get back to running smoothly. You will need to pay a specialist to help you instead, which will force you to endure added costs and delays. Since Microsoft has switched their commitments to Business Central, there are many experts available to help your business. This will result in less costs and fewer delays!
