GP Multi-Bin Functionalities

Posted on: May 25, 2025 | By: Page Wildridge | Microsoft Dynamics GP

Microsoft’s plans for their on-premise ERP product, Microsoft Dynamics GP, have been evolving as they place emphasis on their cloud-based offerings. While these updates have signaled the end of the modern GP lifecycle, it is important to remember that GP still has functionalities that your business can take advantage of. In this blog, we will cover the multi-bin feature in the ERP and how your business can utilize this tool to improve your warehousing.

Benefits of Multi-Bin Tracking

Multi-bin tracking allows you to track the specific location of your items down to the bin in your warehouses. Staying on track of your inventory is a vital part of keeping your warehouses organized and your processes efficient. This feature helps businesses have extremely accurate inventory control, especially if your business has multiple warehouses. Additionally, multi-bin tracking lets you optimize your layout processes. This includes placing specific bins for high demand items in specific locations, or items that require certain storage requirements.

Enabling Multi-Bin Tracking within Your ERP

To start multi-bin tracking, enable the multiple bins feature under Inventory Control. First click on “Tools,” then “Set-up,” “Inventory,” and finally “Inventory Control.” Next, you will need to set up the bins to define the bins within your inventory sites. This allows you to name and number them for easier use. Next, assign the bins to items. From there, Dynamics GP will track the quantities of each of these items in the bin so you can stay on top of your inventory levels.

Barcode Scanners

You can utilize third-party applications to bring a higher level of functionality to your GP. To start using barcode scanners to keep track of the inventory within your bins, you can integrate with the third-party. Then, start scanning items during put-away, receiving, and other transactions with your inventory. This allows you to scan new inventory upon receival and add an extra layer of accuracy within your warehouses.

GP Next Steps

If your business is planning to stick with GP, you need to evaluate the potential costs and benefits of the ERP. Continuing to use GP allows your business to take advantage of the several functionalities that are still offered, and will continue to be offered, by the ERP. However, Microsoft has indicated that they will no longer update the ERP. This means that the GP you are using today will be the same GP you are using 5 years from now. As you stay on the ERP, you should allocate resources to maintaining the ERP, since you will have to seek out specialists when the software runs into inevitable issues (just as all software does!)
