Developing Power BI Reports Linked to Business Central
Posted on: July 26, 2024 | By: Page Wildridge | Microsoft Dynamics Business Central
Last month, Sarah Massie from Logan Consulting presented on the power of Business Central at the Dynamics Community Summit Roadshow! In case you missed it, in this blog we will discuss her presentation on Power BI.

Power BI is a Microsoft tool to help you visual your data through dashboards and reports. When you pair Power BI with your Business Central, you can take your reporting to the next level. Additionally, you can even view these reports directly within Business Central, without ever leaving the ERP. Here is a quick summary of the topics we covered in the presentation.
Linking Business Central to Power BI Desktop
To ensure you can create reports, you need to first connect the two softwares. First, navigate to Power BI Desktop and select “Get Data.” Afterwards, select “Online Services” and click “Connect” for Business Central. Once you connect the two, you will be asked to sign in once to your BC Account.
Building Reports
Once you have completed the previous step, you can start to build reports. In the “Navigator’ window, you can see the data sources that are available for your reports. Simply select a folder to see which data sources you would like to use. You can choose from a variety of API options, including Standard, Advanced, and Web Services. For more information on these API choices, click here to learn more from Microsoft.
Display PowerBI Reports in Business Central
To display your reports directly within your ERP, you can choose to publish to PowerBI service. On the homepage, you can toggle between the reports you produced within PowerBI. Additionally, Business Central has a PowerBI “factbox” that displays reports for your data to provide insight into the information you are viewing. Some reports are generated automatically by the ERP, while others you can customize yourself. Learn more here.
