Microsoft Dynamics GP – How to Create a Test Company
Posted on: June 5, 2017 | By: Jim Bertler | Microsoft Dynamics GP
To test certain issues, it may be necessary to use a troubleshooting technique by using the live company data. To do this, a user can copy a live company database to a test company database.
The first step is to create the company in GP Utilities.
-
Launch GP Utilities and process the Create a Company function.
-
Give the test company an ID and a name.
-
Do not check the box for loading shipping methods, payment terms, or default chart of accounts. This info will come from the live database copy.
-
Copy access from the company that is being created as a test company.
5. Click Next, click next again and click finish.
While that test company is being created, take a backup of the existing live company.
-
Open SQL Management Studio and login as sa.
-
Click on the plus sign next to databases. Right click on the database you would like to create a backup of, click tasks, then backup.
3. Check the Copy only backup box. Choose a location to save that you will remember.
4. Click Media options on the left and check the box that says Verify backup when finished. Click OK to backup the company.
Once the new company is created, it will appear in SQL Management Studio as another database (it might be necessary to refresh before it can be seen). Now, it is time to restore the backup that was just taken.
-
Right click on the new database, click tasks, click restore, click database.
2. Click Device for the source and choose the backup file just created. Make sure the destination is the test company.
3. Click File. Check the relocate box. Now look at the restore as field. Be sure that .mdf and .ldf files are for the new test company.
4. Click Options, check the overwrite the existing database box and the close existing connections box. Click OK.
Once the restore is finished, a script must be run against the new test company. The script can be found at this link in step #6.
