Focus on Processes

Why Process

Too many times people focus on the software and its functionality.  The most important issue we are trying to solve is the process.  The software solution simply aids the effort in performing the process.  By streamlining processes and creating efficiencies you can drive real business value and return on investment.  I am often asked by clients or prospects about the value of an ERP system or accounting software.  The true value in the system is in defining and documenting effective business processes that are aided by the appropriate use of software.

Your Business Is Unique Not Your Process

Another major topic of discussion with clients and prospects is industry specific solutions.  I always remind people that what makes your business unique is your service, or specific tools or techniques you may possess, but the fundamental business processes are the same across many organizations.  In the end businesses need some or all of the basic functions such as: taking orders, billing customers, approving purchase requests, paying vendors, tracking inventory and producing financial statements.  These transactional based tasks are handled by an ERP or Accounting system and are very similar across most businesses.

Review, Improve, Extend

The final key to business process is to review, improve and extend.  Too often companies address processes when they implement a system, but they do not continually address the issues.  Once an initial implementation is complete companies need to continue to review what they have done and continue to extend the solution.  The introduction of workflow capabilities in Dynamics GP 10 is an excellent example of an opportunity to extend and improve processes.  Workflow will allow you to automate redundant tasks and streamline processes.
