In prior versions of AX, one of the nice features was that you could export almost any form to Excel.  Whether the data was vendor records or general journal lines, it was a very well-liked feature even though the data was static.  However, there were some forms in which AX did not provide an option to export to Excel.  Specifically, account structures were not able to be exported to Excel.  Fortunately, this crucial setup form can now be exported to Excel.  Additionally, the data can be exported to Excel, altered, and uploaded back into D365.  Below I will demonstrate how this can be achieved.

Firstly, go to General ledger > Chart of accounts > Structures > Configure account structures

Select the account structure you would like to export by finding it in the list and clicking on the name.  I’m going to select USMF’s Manufacturing P&L account structure from the Contoso demo data.

Once you have opened your account structure, click the ‘Open in Microsoft Office’ button in the top right-hand corner of the page.

This will offer a drop-down menu.  Select the option to export to Excel ‘Segments and allowed values’.

Alternatively, if you select the option to open in Excel ‘Account structure allowed values’ option, you can edit the account structure in an Excel workbook and upload back into D365 (data is dynamic).

This will open Excel in a form like this.  After making your changes, be sure to click the Publish button in the Microsoft Dynamics Office Add-in Data Connector so that D365 will be updated.

Continuing with just exporting the static data to Excel, you could automatically save to OneDrive or SharePoint, but I will click Download so I can save it locally.

Here is the result, the account structure exported into Excel lines.

Account structures can become extremely complex, so this tool is especially helpful when troubleshooting an account structure issue or when your company wants to make changes.  It’s also great for a pure documentation standpoint as well!  For additional information please feel free to reach out to us at info@loganconsulting.com or (312) 345-8817.
