New Feature: Security Role Audit in D365 for Finance and Operations

Many customers have come to us asking for audit information centered around user security.  In prior versions of AX, if you do enough digging, and enable database logging, you may get what you need.  D365 has addressed some of these concerns by introducing an audit trail button on the security role form.   The form will provide you with a time stamp, an event type, a User ID, an Object type and the name of the object.  In the screen shot below you will see a newly created security role.

Once the role is created, the next step involves attaching a duty to the role.  After the duty, has been attached, you can click the audit trail button again and you will notice an update has occurred.  Clicking the View Permissions button at the top of the form will open the permission form to show you what the security role can do.  This looks very similar to the database logging events that you may have seen in prior versions of AX.

As a final step in this brief post, there is a new “publish” feature that has been introduced in D365.  In prior versions of AX, any change to security was done in real time.  This new publish feature allows you to make changes without having them take place immediately.  This allows you to stage changes prior a release, or make changes on the go without impacting users during business hours.  A Publish event will also show up on the new audit trail form.

These new features have added a layer of traceability to the security roles that should help both internal and external audit teams.    I know this has helped some of our clients already!
