One of the most exciting and robust features to Microsoft’s Dynamics 365 product offerings is Project Service Automation. Companies have always struggled to find an efficient way to manage projects and all the moving parts that come along with a complex business project. From the signing of the initial contract, to creating a project plan, booking and scheduling resources, and recording and approving time, most projects are highly complex. Finally, with Project Service Automation, each project piece can be contained in one place and interrelated in a user-friendly way.

As depicted the Project Service module fits directly into an organization’s current Dynamics 365 environment. This allows the user to create projects from existing Opportunities and for customer’s that are already Accounts in Dynamics.

There are a few ways of starting a project. Within your current Dynamics 365 environment, you can start an opportunity and start getting some of the basic project information. You can also start a quote, and gather even more project details. From there you can convert an opportunity or quote into a project.

You can also create a project directly from the Projects button under Planning and Delivery and clicking New Project. Within your project form there is all the pertinent details needed for running and evaluating the project. Out of the box the header contains details about Due Date, Estimated Cost, Cost Consumption, and Progress. The business process flow lists the stages of the project from start to finish. The main body of the project form gives the general project information, as well as estimates and actuals for dollar amounts and time.

Moving further down the project form are sub grids for Project Quotes and Project Opportunities. As mentioned above, the user can see all the opportunities and quotes that were created in order to form this project.

Lastly, at the bottom of the project form is a sub grid for project team members. This provides very useful information on each project resource like hours, start/end dates, and roles. The last tab is for project Status. This provides a visual start for project completion and cost consumption by percentage. Project Service has a mountain of functionality and project form is the hub of information for the other aspects of the project. Stay tuned for further updates and blogs what else project service can do.
