How to Navigate in Dynamics 365 for Operations

I’m sure many of you are acutely aware that Dynamics 365 for Operations is a web-based platform, which is a major overhaul from the previous versions of Microsoft Dynamics AX.  Many things still look and feel the same, however, as with every major transformation, many features simply do not exist anymore.  I hoped you have prepared your farewell because the breadcrumb bar is no longer in the new version of AX, Dynamics 365 for Operations.  I’ll admit that I was fond of this type of navigation, but I’m also excited about the new features D365 has offered for their navigation methods.  In this blog, I’ll demonstrate the different ways to navigate through D365.

In the left hand side of the home page, it should look like something below.  Clicking on the 9 square boxes icon will take you to the Microsoft Office home page, where you can access different Microsoft products such as OneDrive and Excel.  To the right of that you will see the Dynamics 365 drop down.  Opening the drop down will show you the different apps available (currently we are in the ‘Operations’ application).  Contoso Entertainment System USA is the default legal entity (USMF) we are in.  Finally, click on the 3 horizontal lines to access the many modules and workspaces in the system.

From here, we can see 4 different drop downs; favorites, recent, workspaces and modules.

To add a page to favorites, simply click the star button next to a form/ workspace when hovering your mouse near it as seen below.

The recent drop down will show the forms you were recently in.  Think of it like an internet history page.

The workspaces is a new feature in D365.  You can read about them more here, but essentially these forms operate as a single area where you can address multiple tasks quickly and efficiently.

These workspaces are also located on the home page when you first log on (what you see is dependent upon your security).

Finally, that brings us to the modules.  This is similar to prior versions of AX where you would see modules located on the left hand side of the window.

The difference here is that when you click on a module, such as Accounts payable, it opens the module in a form to the side.

Once you click on one of these forms, then you will be taken to that webpage.  Two important things to note.  Firstly, clicking the ‘X’ will close this page and take you back to the home page.  Secondly, clicking that box icon next the ‘X’ will pop this form out to a separate window.

There are two more things I want to touch on.  In order to change the legal entity you are operating in, you must go to the top of the form, click the drop down and select the legal entity.

You may have noticed that magnifying glass next to the legal entity drop down.  This is an important, new feature in D365.  When you click on the icon, it will open up a search bar.  Let’s say I want to complete some tasks pertaining to our fixed assets, but I’m not sure how to get there.  Simply type in ‘fixed assets’ and the search bar will bring up all the forms/workspaces that contains those keywords.  Select the form/workspace that you want and you will immediately be directed there.

I hope this has been a beneficial guide to discover new navigation methods of Dynamics 365 for Operations.  For additional information please feel free to reach out to us at info@loganconsulting.com or (312) 345-8817.

Farewell, breadcrumb bar, it was nice knowing ya.
